Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation have been a key drivers in the pandemic response, and now, possibly in rural health care.

During FierceMarkets’ webinar on May 7 titled, “How Life Sciences Companies Are Responding to COVID-19 with AI”, Calarco mentioned the broader benefits of AI in clinical workflows. She said AI could be used to manage remote work more effectively, deploy solutions with increased speed and accuracy, as well as eliminate situations that would compromise the health of workers.
Calarco also said that AI bots are helping companies manage large amounts of call inquiries through automated call centers, which can access patient data and regulatory forms. For general purposes, we’ll see the Internet of Things (IoT) have greater influence and capabilities in the health care industry.
When asked how AI might specifically help the telehealth industry, Calarco said AI could help facilitate the monitoring of digital health devices and help providers become more proactive in their approaches, especially for rural markets.
She said Automation Anywhere is working with some companies to connect AI automated communications with patient tracking, similar to mPulse Mobile’s campaign. Calarco predicts IoT and wearable technologies will be at the cusp of value, and patient-centered engagement will become the mainstream.
“I think this is a great opportunity to help people that are in rural areas, as well as globally,” Calarco said.
There is not complete agreement in the telehealth industry of how AI would help the health care industry, but it’s certainly a trend to watch.
